According to the Narayanganj District Family Planning Office, in addition to family planning procedures, the Mother and Child Welfare Center provides services to about 400 pregnant women every month, performs 30 normal deliveries and 4 to 5 cesarean sections. However, cesarean sections have been stopped since October 18 due to the center’s Monopolar Diathermy machine becoming unusable.
On October 18, the Medical Officer (Clinic) of the District Mother and Child Welfare Center, Dr. Afsana Jahan, informed Shahidul Islam, Deputy Director of Family Planning, in writing that it was not possible to perform cesarean operations due to the breakdown of the diathermy machine. This was hampering the achievement of targets and routine operations. She requested the supply of a new machine on an urgent basis.
Later, Deputy Director Shahidul Islam presented the matter at the Victoria Hospital Management Committee meeting held in the District Commissioner’s conference room on November 5. Realizing the importance of the problem, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah ordered the Zilla Parishad to provide a diathermy machine as a gift as soon as possible.
In continuation of this, on Sunday (November 9), the diathermy machine was handed over to the Narayanganj Mother and Child Welfare Center.
At this time, Dr. Afsana Jahan said that due to the malfunctioning machine, mothers in need of cesarean services had to be referred to Victoria General Hospital for a long time. Expressing gratitude to the Deputy Commissioner, she said, “We were disappointed because there was no opportunity to buy a new machine in the budget of the Department of Family Planning. But we did not think that the DC sir would respond so quickly. He took all the necessary steps and handed over the machine to us today.”
Deputy Director Shahidul Islam said, after learning about the matter, I applied for the machine to the Director General of the Department of Family Planning, but due to budget constraints, it was not granted. Praising the Deputy Commissioner, he said, “DC Sir attaches great importance to the health sector. Earlier, he had helped pregnant mothers during the crisis of 1 lakh iron and folic acid tablets. Today, he has again provided the machine.”
At the machine handover ceremony, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Zahidul Islam Miah said, “We believe that if the mother’s health is not good, the child’s health will not be good. Therefore, we always give special importance to maternal health; we will give it in the future too.” He requested the health workers, “Many of the mothers are helpless and illiterate. Work with sincerity towards them so that their healthcare is not at risk in any way.”
He said that glucometers and blood pressure machines will also be supplied quickly as per the needs of the center.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Alamgir Hossain, BNP Mohanagor Secretary Advocate Abu Al Yusuf Khan Tipu, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Central Working Council member Maulana Moinuddin Ahmad and others were also present at the ceremony.
