Some saboteurs tried to cause “isolated” incidents in at least 49 of the 35,000 puja mandap across the country, said BARB-11 Director General Additional IGP AKM Shahidur Rahman. However, he also said that these sabotage attempts will be strictly prevented.
The BARB DG said, “We have taken strict legal action in each case and have been able to arrest more than 19 saboteurs so far.”
He said this in a briefing before journalists after visiting the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram in Narayanganj city on Wednesday (October 1) evening.
Commenting on the autumn Durga Puja being held smoothly except for a few “isolated incidents”, the BAB DG said, “So far, out of about 35,000 mandap, some saboteurs, some cowards and some mentally ill people have tried to cause isolated incidents in 49 mandap. We have taken strict legal action in every case and have been able to arrest more than 19 saboteurs so far.”
Shahidur Rahman said, “This is a Bangladesh of harmony. This country is for people of all religions, this country is not for people of any particular religion. This is a country of our 18 crore people. No matter what religion or caste we belong to in this country, we will all celebrate the rituals of every religion with equal rights. And we will help each other.”
“There is no question of obstructing and causing disruption here. Those who obstruct and cause disruption are breaking the law, we are taking legal action against them.”
He also said that there was an effort from the administration and law enforcement agencies to organize this Durga Puja successfully. The event will conclude with Vijaya Dashami.
The top official of the BAR said that local politicians and dignitaries have also cooperated in this peaceful event.
He also said, “We will be able to celebrate the festivals better in the future. And we are already making that effort. Because we will not give space to saboteurs and miscreants in any way. Let our relationship of love remain intact. However, it would be best if we could do this puja, Eid congregation of Muslims and Christmas celebrations of Christians spontaneously without the presence of law enforcement agencies. That day will be real joy.”
He also expressed the hope that in the near future all kinds of festivals will be celebrated without any kind of security guard.
Along with the BAB Director General, RAB-11 Commander Lieutenant Colonel SM Sajjad Hossain, District Police Superintendent Mohammad Jasim Uddin, Metropolitan BNP Convener Advocate Sakhawat Hossain Khan, Member Secretary Advocate Abu Al Yusuf Khan Tipu, Principal of Ramakrishna Mission Ashram Swami Eknathananda Maharaj, President of District Puja Udjavan Parishad Shankar Kumar Dey, General Secretary Shikhan Sarkar Shipon and others were also present.
