Khagrachhari in a state of chaos: Section 144 imposed for an indefinite period

The situation is tense after the imposition of Section 144 in Khagrachhari district headquarters and municipality. This Sunday morning, the army and police have been deployed at various points in Khagrachhari municipality. In addition, seven platoons of BGB have been deployed at the district headquarters in Khagrachhari. Members of the security forces have been questioning people moving at various points since morning.
Meanwhile, shops in the city are closed. No untoward incident has been reported anywhere in the district since morning. In addition, more than 2,000 tourists who were stranded in Sajek last night were taken to their destination under the security of the army.
It is learned that yesterday, during the road blockade called by Jumma students and the public, two sides exchanged chases and face-offs were formed in the areas adjacent to Mahajan Para and Upazila Parishad of Khagrachhari. At least 23 people were injured in the clash between the two sides. Later, the district administration imposed Section 144 to control the situation.
Khagrachari Police Superintendent Md. Arefin Jewel said, “The army, BGB and police are working together to control the situation. We are working to prevent new incidents of violence.”
Meanwhile, seven platoons of BGB have been deployed in Khagrachari Sadar Upazila to control the situation. BGB Khagrachari Battalion Assistant Director Md. Hasnuzzaman confirmed the matter.
